Why Cornwall Shapes Everything I Create

Living and working in Cornwall isn't just about the stunning views (though they certainly don't hurt my daily motivation!). This incredible county has fundamentally shaped who I am as a maker and how I approach every aspect of BCR Handmade Organic Clothing.
There's something magical about starting your workday with the sight of the Cornish coastline. That ever-changing palette of blues and greens, the way the light shifts throughout the day, the dramatic skies - it all feeds directly into my design process. You can see Cornwall's influence in our colour choices, from the sage greens reminiscent of sea glass to the warm greys that echo our granite cliffs.
But it's not just about aesthetics. Cornwall has taught me the importance of working with the seasons and respecting natural rhythms. Our harsh winters mean I understand the need for clothes that are both practical and beautiful - pieces that can handle muddy beach walks and cosy pub lunches. The mild but unpredictable weather has influenced our "Grow with Me" concept too. When you're never quite sure if it'll be warm enough for shorts or if you'll need layers, adaptable clothing becomes essential.
The Cornish community has been incredible for BCR's growth. There's such a strong culture here of supporting local businesses and valuing craftsmanship. My customers often tell me they love knowing their children's clothes are made just down the road, that they can picture the workshop where each piece was created. This connection feels especially important in our digital world - parents want authenticity and a story they can relate to.
Working in Cornwall has also kept me grounded in sustainability values. You can't live by the sea and not be aware of plastic pollution. You can't walk our moors and not appreciate the importance of preserving natural spaces. Every fabric choice I make is influenced by wondering: "What impact will this have on the Cornwall my children will inherit?"
I love that our clothes are "adventure-ready" because that's simply how we live here. A typical day might involve a beach walk before breakfast, a trip to the playground that somehow involves climbing rocks, and ending up covered in sand despite your best efforts. Our clothes need to handle real Cornish childhoods - and they do.
Most importantly, Cornwall keeps me connected to what really matters. When work feels overwhelming, a quick walk along the coastal path reminds me why I do this. When I'm struggling with a design, the patterns in rock pools or the way seaweed moves in the tide often provide inspiration.
This place has made me a better maker, a more thoughtful business owner, and definitely a more grateful person. Every BCR piece carries a little bit of Cornwall's spirit - that sense of adventure, respect for nature, and appreciation for things made to last.
