From Kitchen Table to Cornwall Workshop - The Story Behind BCR

When people ask me how BCR Handmade Organic Clothing began, I always smile because it feels like such an unlikely journey from where I am today. What started as late-night sewing sessions making cloth nappies for my little one at my kitchen table in 2019 has grown into a thriving, sustainable fashion business right here in beautiful Cornwall.

I remember the exact moment everything changed. I was folding my little ones outgrown clothing, looking at the mountain of synthetic baby clothes we'd been gifted, and feeling this overwhelming sense that something wasn't right. The fabrics felt harsh, the colours would fade after just a few washes, and worst of all, I knew most of these items would end up in landfill within months. That's when I decided I wanted to create something different - clothing that would be gentle on little ones' skin, kind to our planet, and beautiful enough to be treasured and passed down.

Those first few months when we started our clothing range were challenging in ways I never expected. Learning about organic cotton sourcing while sleep-deprived was no joke! I spent hours researching suppliers, testing fabrics, and teaching myself new sewing techniques through YouTube videos. My dining table became my cutting space, and I'd often find myself pinning patterns at 2am when the house was finally quiet.

The breakthrough came when I discovered I could work with UK-based suppliers who shared my values. Finding a printer who used eco-friendly inks with zero water wastage felt like striking gold. Suddenly, my vision of creating beautiful, sustainable children's clothing felt achievable rather than just a dream.

The name BCR comes from, Bear Cottage Reusables, where I started over three years ago. My children are my ‘Little Bears’, they inspired this entire journey. Every design decision, every fabric choice, every late night spent perfecting a pattern has been driven by my desire to create a better world for them and all the little ones who wear our clothes.

What I never anticipated was how much joy this business would bring me. Every photo customers share of their children in BCR clothes, every message telling me how a romper lasted through two children and is still going strong - these moments remind me why I started this journey. It's not just about clothing; it's about creating pieces that become part of families' stories.

Looking back now from my proper workshop space (goodbye, kitchen table!), I'm amazed at how far we've come. The One Metre Challenge, our subscription boxes, the preloved scheme - these innovations all came from listening to what families really needed and wanted. But at its heart, BCR is still that same kitchen table dream: creating beautiful, sustainable clothing that celebrates childhood and respects our planet.

The journey from that first late-night sewing session to today hasn't always been smooth, but it's been authentic. Every stitch still carries that same intention I had sitting at my kitchen table - to create something better for our children.
